TRICKS OF THE TRADE

TIPS FOR YOUR

JOB SEARCH

  • After applying to the openings you see here, use job aggregators such as Indeed and Simply Hired – they will make your job search a lot easier.
  • Post your resume to job boards such as Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed, Ladders, and update your LinkedIn profile.  If possible, list in your LinkedIn heading that you are seeking new opportunities.
  • If you’re out of work, treat your job search as your full-time job – spend 40 hours a week doing so.

TIPS FOR YOUR

RESUME

  • Not getting a response to your resume submittals?  A common mistake is applying to jobs in which you feel you are qualified, but your resume doesn’t reflect it on paper.  Review the must-have requirements for the job and make sure your resume clearly lists that you have these skills – in more places than one.  Add specific skills listed in the job description in the summary section as well as the body of your resume.  Your ‘hit ratio’ will skyrocket.  But be honest – if you don’t have the skills listed in the job description, don’t lie on your resume – and don’t get your hopes up – it’s probably not the right fit.

TIPS FOR YOUR

RESUME

  • Show up on time for interviews. Wear formal attire – a dark suit with blue, white, or gray button-down shirt & tie for men, and a dark business suit and button down shirt for women. Bring a notepad and pen – preferably a black portfolio. Review the company’s website and latest news about the company online.
  • Don’t just ask the typical interview questions found online.  The best questions come up during your conversations in the interview – write them down as you think of them and ask them to the interviewer when the opportunity presents itself.  Reflect back to a relevant topic you discussed earlier in the conversation and ask questions that dive deeper into that topic.  This shows that you are listening and paying attention during the interview and that you are genuinely curious about the company, job, and their business.
